{"id":544,"date":"2018-11-16T20:49:59","date_gmt":"2018-11-17T00:49:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theotherplace.xyz\/?p=544"},"modified":"2018-11-17T10:18:37","modified_gmt":"2018-11-17T14:18:37","slug":"mayme-bradshaw-delaney-1872-1941","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/?p=544","title":{"rendered":"Mayme Bradshaw Delaney 1872-1941"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I moved to Manchester, NH in 1986, I had no idea that that there was so much family history there.\u00a0 \u00a0Several of Pat and Johanna&#8217;s offspring lived in Manchester for a time, and\u00a0 at least two (Alice and Mayme) are buried there.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know a lot about Mayme&#8217;s day to day life, or what she was like,\u00a0 but I can say that I LITERALLY walk in her footsteps.\u00a0 Usually on the way to cash a check or pick up a meatball sub.\u00a0 &#8220;What the hell does that mean?&#8221;\u00a0 you may ask.\u00a0 Read on&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Mary Emelda (Mayme) Bradshaw, the third child of Patrick and Johanna Bradshaw was born June 10th,\u00a0 1872 in Chateaugay, NY.\u00a0 \u00a0 She appears as a child in the 1875 New York State Census and the 1880 Federal census in Chateaugay.<\/p>\n<p>According to my dad, her name was pronounced &#8220;Mame&#8221; &#8211; one syllable, not &#8220;Mamie&#8221;, as you might expect.\u00a0 Not that it matters, I suppose,\u00a0 but it&#8217;s just one more little fact that we can hold onto for another generation or two.<\/p>\n<p>My Uncle John wrote that Mayme and her younger sister Alice moved to Manchester some time at the late 1800s, most likely to find work in the Amoskeag Textile Mills(fear not\u00a0 &#8211; the next biographical post will be all about Aunt Alice).\u00a0 We don&#8217;t know when they left,\u00a0 but neither of them appear in Chateaugay in the 1900 Federal Census.\u00a0 Other sources say that Aunt Alice was 16 when she moved to Manchester, so a best guess would be 1890.<\/p>\n<p>Mayme married John Delaney on January 27th, 1903, in Haverill MA. John was a Taylor who (according to Uncle John) had a contract for Policeman&#8217;s uniforms.\u00a0 \u00a0They had no children.<\/p>\n<p>The 1910 census shows the couple living at 123 Oakland Street.\u00a0 Mayme&#8217;s occupation is listed as Saleswoman &#8211; grocery store.\u00a0 They lived at that location through at least 1927.<\/p>\n<p>In 1927 John received an inheritance from Charles Rowell,\u00a0 the employer of Alice Bradshaw, Mayme&#8217;s sister.\u00a0 Charles passed away with no heirs, and left\u00a0 most of his fortune to to Alice who had been working for the family for decades.\u00a0 \u00a0The only other individual named in his will was\u00a0 Mayme&#8217;s husband John , who received $10,000, or about $139,000 in 2018 dollars.<\/p>\n<p>By 1930 they had moved to\u00a0 farm in Londonderry.\u00a0 John is listed in the 1930 census as a Farmer, and no occupation for Mayme is listed.<\/p>\n<p>I doubt that Mayme and her husband changed careers and lifestyles so dramatically out of economic need.\u00a0 Both were in their mid-fifties.\u00a0 A career change to farming in late middle age sounds more like a retirement strategy, especially given the fact that John had received the inheritance from Charles Rowell.<\/p>\n<p>My grandparents visited Mayme sometime in 1930, and brought along their sons John and Gerald, who would have been in their early teens by then.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_593\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-593\" style=\"width: 10336px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scan-2.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-593 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scan-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"10336\" height=\"7616\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scan-2.jpeg 10336w, https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scan-2-300x221.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scan-2-768x566.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scan-2-1024x755.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">CA 1930 Mayme Bradshaw Delaney (Left) , Pat Bradshaw (Second From Left), John Bradshaw (fourth from Left), Gerald Bradshaw (Seated), &#8220;Junior&#8221; (Right) &#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>CLICK TO ENLARGE<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A few observations about this photo:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0 I am guessing\u00a0 that this was taken at Mayme and John&#8217;s house.\u00a0 The tidy house and surroundings seem more New England than Franklin County, NY.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0I can&#8217;t identify the man in the middle of the photo below,\u00a0 but he&#8217;s probably John Delaney.<\/p>\n<p>3) Pat (my Grandfather) seems at ease, and is almost smiling.\u00a0 \u00a0In most photos he&#8217;s a pretty grim fellow.\u00a0 The other adults seem to be enjoying themselves too.\u00a0 The boys look miserable.<\/p>\n<p>4) Gerald and Junior&#8217;s footwear is pretty impressive for the early 30&#8217;s.\u00a0 \u00a0 And those knickers &#8211; wow.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another picture of Mayme and her nephews.\u00a0 \u00a0Not sure what was going on, but these boys did not seem happy to be there.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_594\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-594\" style=\"width: 10016px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scan-3.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-594 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scan-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"10016\" height=\"7552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scan-3.jpeg 10016w, https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scan-3-300x226.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scan-3-768x579.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scan-3-1024x772.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-594\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Mayme Delaney and Nephews:\u00a0 L-R John Bradshaw, Gerald Bradshaw (rear) &#8220;Junior&#8221;, Mayme<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>CLICK TO ENLARGE<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Farm life didn&#8217;t last long.\u00a0 John died in 1933.\u00a0 Shortly after,\u00a0 Mayme moved into an apartment in Manchester where she lived for the rest of her life.\u00a0 \u00a0The apartment was on Elm Street, just a couple miles from her sister Alice&#8217;s home on River Road.<\/p>\n<p>The apartment building (1480 Elm) is still there, about a quarter mile from where I work.\u00a0 I walk by it every so often on my way to the bank or to Pappy&#8217;s Pizza, which are both right across the street.<\/p>\n<p>She died in 1941 at the age of 68, and is buried in the Rowell Family plot in Manchester&#8217;s Pine Grove Cemetery.
