Beers&#8217; Atlas of Franklin County, NY 1876<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_572\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-572\" style=\"width: 954px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Google-Maps-Earlville-and-Quaker-Settlement-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-572 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Google-Maps-Earlville-and-Quaker-Settlement-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"954\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Google-Maps-Earlville-and-Quaker-Settlement-1.jpg 954w, https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Google-Maps-Earlville-and-Quaker-Settlement-1-300x162.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Google-Maps-Earlville-and-Quaker-Settlement-1-768x415.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-572\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Maps Screenshot of Earlville and Quaker Settlement 09\/10\/2018<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It has been far too long between since I put anything up here.\u00a0 I got overwhelmed by all the research required to do the next few posts about the great aunts, uncles,\u00a0 and grandparents.\u00a0 So, while I do a deep dive into aunt Mayme&#8217;s probate records, here&#8217;s a brief observation.<\/p>\n<p>If you waded through my post about the data from the US census, then you know that I love digging into obscure data to see what it can say about people&#8217;s lives and stories.\u00a0 (You did read it, right?\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/?p=383\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here&#8217;s a link<\/a> if your eyes glazed over the first time.)\u00a0 And if there&#8217;s one thing that I love more than annual crop yield statistics, it&#8217;s maps.\u00a0 My God do I love maps.\u00a0 Old maps.\u00a0 New maps.\u00a0 Google Earth, Middle Earth, the AAA TripTik from my 1984 drive from Florida to New Hampshire.\u00a0 Maps are it, man.<\/p>\n<p>As I spent time poring over the <a href=\"https:\/\/theotherplace.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/nypl.digitalcollections.510d47e3-4f25-a3d9-e040-e00a18064a99.001.g.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">map of Chateaugay from 1876<\/a>, I was struck by all the houses in Earlville\u00a0 (or Slab City as we locals call it).\u00a0 Its a spot on a map with a handful\u00a0 houses now but,\u00a0 my dad talked about how the little hamlet (that&#8217;s what Wikipedia calls it) at the intersection of the McCormick Road and the Earlville Road had once been it&#8217;s own community.\u00a0 But holy cow &#8211; the map below shows more than 20 residences, (most packed tightly together), a starch factory, a cheese factory, a butter factory, and a school. It was a hopping place!<\/p>\n<p>Since families were pretty large back then, I would guess that the population\u00a0 of Earlville must have approached 100.\u00a0 \u00a0With all the people, and three businesses right there,\u00a0 this neighborhood must have it&#8217;s own sense of place. It was a little village tucked into the Northeast corner of town.<\/p>\n<p>A few more observations<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The old church on the Earlville Road doesn&#8217;t appear on the map.\u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s still there today.\u00a0 It must have been built after 1876.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>I don&#8217;t see any mention of the Gibson family.\u00a0 Orville Gibson the founder of Gibson Guitars was born in Earlville in the 1850&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>In 1876, the Graham road extended North all the way up to the Shee Wood&#8217;s road.\u00a0 \u00a0Now it&#8217;s a dead end.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are lots of people who know a lot more about the history of Earlville than I do.\u00a0 I just thought I&#8217;d make a few observations based on what this jaw-droppingly detailed old map shows.<\/p>\n<p>As the screen shot from Google maps shows, many of those houses are gone.\u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s a pleasant drive in the country, but you&#8217;d never be able to tell\u00a0that there was a village here with its own businesses,\u00a0 school and church.<\/p>\n<p>If this sounds like I&#8217;m bemoaning the decline of Chateaugay and Earlville, that&#8217;s not my intent.\u00a0 I&#8217;m more interested in remembering and celebrating our history.\u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s just a reminder that our history is all around us &#8211; some places grow,\u00a0 and some shrink.\u00a0Our collective memory is short.\u00a0 A lot gets lost in a generation.\u00a0 Sometimes it takes a quick look at a moldy old map to help us remember.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; It has been far too long between since I put anything up here.\u00a0 I got overwhelmed by all the research required to do the next few posts about the great aunts, uncles,\u00a0 and grandparents.\u00a0 So, while I do a deep dive into aunt Mayme&#8217;s probate records, here&#8217;s a brief observation.
